About Substituting magnet materials...
Back to Articles Article Rating:

Often customers wish to substitute a magnet material with another material. This may be to achieve higher performance, lower costs, or gain faster production times. However, some words of caution…

  1. Magnet materials are not always interchangeable. Magnets have different strengths and characteristics. Take each property of the original material and determine if the new material can meet those properties, if not, how it will affect your design.
  2. Magnets have particular operating points. This is determined by their shape and type of material. The operating point will determine how the magnet will perform. At the optimum operating point, the magnet will operate at its maximum energy product.
  3. Service temperature must be carefully considered. Even if you use a more powerful magnet, if the service temperature is high, at that temperature you may have a weaker magnet. An example is substituting Samarium Cobalt with Neodymium Iron Boron. This has been successfully done in many designs, providing significant savings. However, careful considerations must be made since SmCo has a temperature coefficient of Br much less than NdFeB. 4) Consult with us on your application. We are here to help you achieve your goals.
