Health Effects of Permanent Magnets

Permanent magnets are not known to cause any health hazards to any humans, animals, or plant life. There are people who have reported health benefits from being exposed to permanent magnetic fields, but MCE has not found any studies endorsed by the government that can conclusively prove any physiological changes occur.

There are some mechanical effects that one should be aware of. The permanent magnets available today can be extremely strong, depending on the size and type of material used. Some safety precautions are urged. These can be found in the Knowledge Article "Safety Precautions for Handling Magnets".

MCE does not endorse, or challenge, health benefits of permanent magnets. MCE endorses those studies that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) endorses. MCE maintains only those positions that the FDA maintains.

The FDA has conducted studies that show that electromagnetic fields can cause some physiological changes, however, electromagnetic fields (electromagnetic waves) are produced by power lines and devices that use electrical currents at alternating frequencies. The fields produced by permanent magnets are DC fields (non-alternating).
